Job description
The small, central Whistleblowing team at Nationwide are responsible for responding to employee concerns of potential or actual wrongdoing, misconduct or inappropriate behaviours. We ensure that these are appropriately assessed, investigated and where necessary action taken. We manage direct contact with individuals who raise concerns through the Whistleblowing process.
We now have an exciting opportunity to join our team on a Fixed Term Contract basis (21 hours per week for 10 months) to help us continue to support our colleagues in maintaining an effective and appropriate Speak Up/Whistleblowing process. The Whistleblowing Team are very dedicated to their purpose and are forward thinking. This role offers an opportunity to join a team that provides a really important function for the benefit of the Business and our colleagues.
The role will be central to the investigation of concerns raised/allegations made and will have direct involvement in the governance, controls and reporting arrangements. It is essential that the role-holder helps maintain the integrity of the whistleblowing process and is able to demonstrate neutrality, integrity and discretion at all times.
The Whistleblowing Team form part of Nationwide’s Risk Community and report to the Society’s Director of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs. They are responsible for responding to Whistleblowing concerns raised by colleagues and overseeing any subsequent investigation that is deemed appropriate.

What you’ll be doing
The role is extremely varied and will enable you to work with teams and stakeholders across Nationwide. It provides an opportunity to genuinely make a difference and contribute to upholding the Society’s values.
You will be involved in supporting Whistleblowers through their whistleblowing journey, ensuring they are kept updated and that the information they have provided is treated sensitively and confidentially.
You’ll also be expected to support and oversee any subsequent investigation that is initiated as a result of whistleblowers raising their concerns and then briefing/updating senior audiences on developments and outcomes. Excellent investigatory and communication skills (both verbal and written) are therefore vital ingredients.
You will be required to operate reactively, adapting and re-prioritising workloads, having sound judgement and a lateral thought process to aid in capturing your decision making and rationale.
We’ll need you to produce a Terms of Reference for each investigation to outline the key areas of concern and investigatory approach. In some instances, you’ll be asked to undertake the whistleblowing investigation, including collection and analysis of evidence, internal interviews, producing a summary report and presenting the findings and recommended outcome to the Whistleblowing Committee.
About you
We are interested in people who are passionate about doing the right thing and in the right way. Being able to show empathy for those employees who raise concerns whilst ensuring that you remain neutral and independent throughout the investigation process. It is of paramount importance that you are able to demonstrate discretion as you will be working on highly sensitive and strictly confidential matters.
You’ll have an enquiring, probing mindset with the ability to analyse issues/problems and consider alternative ways to approach them.
As a minimum requirement, you’ll need:
- Demonstrable and recent experience of conducting or leading investigations or reviews that have originated from whistleblowers.
- Excellent interview skills with experience of managing difficult and challenging conversations with individuals whilst eliciting the required information.
- Being able to analyse information to establish the facts in a given situation and using sound judgement to recommend an informed outcome.
- Experience of training and presenting to small and large audiences, internal and/or external to Nationwide.
- Be able to demonstrate and show empathy to individuals, who are sometimes experiencing challenging circumstances;
- Have strong verbal and excellent written communication skills, with a particular emphasis on note-taking, report writing and presenting to a senior audience.
