Job description
Good things this way
If you're an ambitious go-getter who enjoys solving problems and learning new skills, our 18-month Technology Development Programme (TDP) provides a clear pathway into a rewarding technology career in banking.
Our programme offers specialist roles in Software Engineering, Data Engineering, and Infrastructure Engineering. You’ll select your preferred specialism when you apply.
You might be a graduate looking to make immediate impact in your career, or a high performing career changer who's keen to launch a new career in technology. Whatever your route, you’ll gain hands-on experience, develop technical and business skills, and contribute to projects that serve our 16 million members.
You’ll build trusted relationships across the organisation, helping us understand customer needs, solve challenges to deliver banking - but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.
We’ll support your development through workshops, simulations, accreditations and on-the-job learning, helping you grow with confidence.
Where you’ll be working
Our Chief Operating Office (COO) is more than technology; it’s the engine behind Nationwide’s transformation into a modern mutual. It’s where strategy meets delivery, and where technology helps us serve our customers better every day.
COO is responsible for:
Delivering our strategy and improving system resilience, introducing new technologies, and enhancing customer experience.
Providing the full IT capability for Nationwide, supporting both customer-facing and colleague services.
Managing nearly half of Nationwide’s operational costs to ensure efficiency and quality across services like payments, facilities, and communications.
Leading our data strategy to help us make informed decisions and deliver better outcomes.
Driving our tech strategy to simplify our IT estate and improving the digital experience for our members.
Location
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, based at our Swindon office.
Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
What you’ll be doing
Our Technology Development Programme has intakes on the 1st June 2026 and 7th September 2026.
You’ll begin with an induction and our Technology Development Programme Academy, where you’ll receive upfront training in core IT and business skills, with a focus on the technical capabilities needed to thrive in your role.
Once you join your team, you’ll follow a personalised learning pathway to support your ongoing development.
With the right mindset and drive, successful completion of the programme could lead to progression into a more senior role.
You’ll also benefit from a bespoke 18-month learning journey designed to build core business skills alongside role-specific training.
Software Engineer
Engineering is where we bring ideas to life, designing and building tools that empower our colleagues and support the delivery of high-quality solutions across Nationwide.
Our engineers work in both agile and waterfall environments, contributing throughout the software development lifecycle with a strong focus on coding, delivery, and continuous improvement.
Many teams specialise in areas such as performance engineering and test engineering, aligned to key product domains including payments, mortgages, savings, financial crime, and a wide range of internal systems.

About you
We’re looking for people who are ready to grow, and with a genuine interest in technology and the determination to build an impactful career. Whether you're a recent graduate, returning to work, or exploring a new direction, our Technology Development Programme offers a clear path forward.
To succeed in this programme, you’ll need to show:
A real passion for technology.

A positive attitude and the motivation to make a difference to customers, communities and society.
The ability to build strong working relationships and engage with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:
- Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind
- Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand
- Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development
- Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes.

Banking – but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society
We forge our own path at Nationwide.
As a mutual, we’re owned by our members - those customers who bank, save or have a mortgage with us. We challenge the financial sector status quo. We don’t see customers as the engine of our own profit. We share our profits with them and put their needs first. Always there when they need us. Supporting them and their lives.
If you’re inspired by fairer finances, passionate about making a meaningful impact, and truly care about our customers, you’re one of us.
At Nationwide, you are challenged to grow and rewarded for doing so. Valued. Recognised. Inspired to be your best. As a community we want our working lives to count. As a team, we celebrate what we achieve. As a standard-setter, we work for the good of customers, communities, and broader society.
We are purpose-driven. Uncompromisingly customer. Unstoppably Nationwide.
